From 1954 until his passing on July 18, 2023, Ed Smock remained a positive, influential presence in the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS). Ed taught and mentored many people, Sailors and civilians alike. He relentlessly pushed for excellence in both equipment and people to help IUSS provide our nation the undersea security necessary during both the cold war and in the current-day Great Power Competition fueled by Russian resurgence and an unprecedented Chinese military buildup.
His lifelong contribution to IUSS was exemplified by Commander, Undersea Surveillances' release of an official Naval message announcing Ed’s passing to IUSS facilities, Submarine Force leadership, and the Chief of Naval Operations. Few people, past or present, typically garner a similar announcement of passing. You can read the official Naval Message below.
Ed was many things to many people. To his family he was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. To others he was a co-worker, friend, mentor, hunting buddy, and many other roles those fortunate to know Ed experienced. Ed was foremost a professional, but he was never without his quick wit and wry smile after that perfectly-timed wise crack or self-deprecating joke.
As we resign ourselves to the fact Ed will no longer be the “last man standing” at this or future IUSS reunions, we can console ourselves knowing we all were fortunate to have our collective lives touched in some manner or fashion by Ed “Smokie” Smock.
Please be sure to say hello to Ed’s family attending the 70th and share stories amongst all attendees to remember one of our best.
Smokie served IUSS from 1954 until July 18, 2023--69 years of our 70 year history. RIP dear friend!
